School Board Changes Tobacco Use Policy

CIBOLA COUNTY - At their Oct. 28 meeting, the Grants/Cibola County School board changed the district policy that covers the use of electronic cigarettes. Dwayne Toivanen, G/CCS Personnel Director, was asked to review New Mexico School Board policies in accordance with a request from Superintendent Dr. Marc Space.

Dr. Space stated his reason for requesting a review was to make sure the default policies would work for the district.

In doing so, Toivanen sought input from school principals who voiced concerns about electronic cigarettes. The school policy banning tobacco use did not cover the fairly new electronic devices.

The new language of the policy more broadly defines tobacco products. Toivanen first introduced the item at the Oct. 7 school board meeting.
