ACA's Tobacco-cessation Benefits Must Be Standardized, Clarified

March 31, 2014 02:31 pm News Staff – Recently, the AAFP joined more than 30 other health care organizations in sending a letter to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking her to provide clear guidance to insurers on the tobacco-cessation benefits that must be offered in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

The letter, which was spearheaded by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, referenced the recent U.S. surgeon general's report The Health Consequences of Smoking -- 50 Years of Progress(, which marked the 50th anniversary of the groundbreaking report from Surgeon General Luther Terry, M.D., that first laid out the evidence linking cigarette smoking to lung cancer and other respiratory diseases.
