From Monday, Tamil Nadu will begin implementing the Central government notification mandating that all tobacco products carry a health warning covering 85 per cent of their packaging.
It’s been a week since the notification came into effect, but as of Friday, cigarette packets sold in the city still had the old warnings — showing a diseased lung and covering only 40 per cent of the display area.
“We received the notification on Thursday and are communicating it to all district-level officers in the State. From Monday, we will start implementation — our teams will carry out inspections and seize any products that do not adhere to the notification,” said Director of Public Health K. Kolandaisamy.
