Gambia: Minister - Tobacco Causes Over 40 Diseases

The Health and Social Welfare minister has highlighted the devastating effects of tobacco use, revealing that it causes over 40 diseases, many of them fatal or disabling. He disclosed that smoking is responsible for over 90% of all lung cancer, 75% of chronic bronchitis and emphysema and nearly 25% of ischemic heart diseases.

Speaking Monday in Kololi during the opening ceremony of a two-day tobacco cessation training, Minister Omar Sey further disclosed that there are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 known to cause cancer. "Chewing tobacco causes a significant proportion of oral cancers. No other consumer product is as dangerous as or kills as many people as tobacco," he indicated.
