Are e-cigarettes really a safer alternative to regular smoking?

Sales of e-cigarettes have tripled in the past three years after they were hailed as a safer alternative to regular smoking.

But perhaps they pose a more immediate danger than lung disease and cancer. Some e-cigs have exploded into flames.

Last night gran Jean Booth was fighting for life in Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester, after her oxygen supply – she was recovering from a hip operation – was allegedly ignited by an e-cig on Friday.

Barmaid Laura Baty from Richmond, North Yorks, revealed last week how one left on charge behind her bar burst into flames, set light to her dress and singed her skin.

And firefighters have been called to house fires caused by exploding electronic substitutes, including one at a nursing home in Chesterfield that left a woman dead.

Some scientists, politicians and health campaigners fear the battery- powered cigarettes may undermine the smoking ban, tempt youngsters into smoking and represent a health risk in their own right.

Last summer the World Health Organization “strongly advised” against using e-cigs until they had been fully vetted. Spokesman Glenn Thomas said: “The science around the safety of e-cigarettes has not been demonstrated. A lot of the toxins which are consumed through e-cigarettes have not been adequately researched.”

Here’s the science bit. E-cigs store nicotine in a solution of glycerine and water called propylene glycol. When you inhale, a heating element steams up a vapour containing addictive nicotine and you suck it in through the mouthpiece.

Air Canada's E-Cigarette Ban To Be More Strictly Upheld After Passenger's 'Vaping' Complaint

Pretty much everyone today can agree that cigarettes are bad. This includes both smokers and non-smokers. The government’s campaign to end smoking seems to have worked well. CDC records shows that in 1965, 42 percent of American adults smoked cigarettes, while in 2012, only 18 percent smoked. This is well on the right tract to their goal of only 12 percent of the population smoking by 2020. Rather than completely giving up smoking, many Americans are opting to switch to e-cigarettes. Due to the novelty, there is not much enforcement on where e-cigarettes should and should not be used. A recent incident has raised the question of where e-cigarettes should be restricted. One passenger on Air Canada complained when she noticed a fellow passenger was allowed to "vape" on his e-cigarettes, even though the airline policy clearly states that "vaping" is not allowed during fligths. Although it’s too late to reprimand the passenger that was vaping on the recent Air Canada flight, this story has caused the airline to clarify their policy regarding e-cigarettes.

Electronic Cigarette Increasingly Being Banned

Electronic cigarettes are following in the footsteps of their smoky predecessors, as they are becoming increasingly banned around the country. The issues creating the controversy about the e-cigs include the sketchy marketing targeted at the youth, the potential unknown risks and safety hazards, the lack of legislation blocking the selling of the product to minors, and other regulation issues.

Many states, cities, counties, school districts, and other entities have taken action against the electronic cigarette, but the information pertaining to each state, or entity, can get quite confusing. Some states have laws that restrict the use of e-cigs in 100 percent smoke-free venues. In Utah, New Jersey, and North Dakota the use of e-cigs is banned in these venues including: non-hospitality workplaces, restaurants, and bars. In North Dakota, they are also banned from gambling facilities. In Utah they are permitted in retailers’ places of business who sell the electronic cigarettes until July 1, 2017.

For other states the laws are even more specific. In Arkansas the product is banned from use on school district properties. In Colorado, tobacco products have been redefined to include e-cigarettes for the purpose of prohibiting them on school properties, unless it was approved by the FDA as a cessation device.

In the state of Delaware, e-cigarettes are prohibited from all state workplaces. This includes indoor and outdoor places, buildings, facilities and surrounding grounds, parking lots, and vehicles owned by the state, and operated on state workplace property. Hawaii has banned the product on all Department of Health properties and Maryland has banned them on their MARC commuter trains. New Hampshire prohibited the cigarettes in public educational facilities and their grounds. In Oklahoma, the product is not allowed in any Department of Corrections facilities, which includes grounds and vehicles. Oregon state employees are restricted from using them in state agency buildings and on the grounds next to the buildings. South Dakota prohibited their use in Department of Corrections facilities and the grounds, by employees and inmates.

In many states where there is no state law against e-cigarettes, local laws are increasingly banning them in 100 percent smoke-free venues, such as work places, restaurants, bars, and gambling facilities. Certain counties in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Mississippi, South Carolina, New York, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia have bans in place.

In Coconino County, Arizona the electronic cigarette is banned in public places, but the ordinance only applies to unincorporated areas. Several cities in Texas have recently banned the product in certain places. This month, an ordinance was passed in Bedford that banned them in areas where smoking is already prohibited. Georgetown, Texas also banned the use of any electronic vaping device in public places, and areas that originally prohibited cigarettes. The new ordinance also bans the sale of the products to minors.

Other cities restricting the use of electronic cigarettes in public places include big cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and New York City. The ban in New York City got a reaction from Citizens Lobbying Against Smoker Harassment (CLASH). The group recently filed a lawsuit aimed at overturning the city’s ban on e-cig use in public. The restriction in Philadelphia treats e-cigs just like regular cigarettes, including prohibiting the sale of them to minors. Los Angeles also joined the list of big cities with an e-cig ban. In L.A. the products are banned in public places, except vaping lounges and 21-and-over nightclubs and bars.

The ban is definitely catching on across the country, as the electronic cigarette is increasingly banned in a variety of places. Petco Park in San Diego does not allow the smoking of e-cigarettes inside the ballpark. A committee at Louisiana State University has voted to recommend e-cigs be banned from the campus. The banning trend will seemingly continue, as the electronic cigarette is treated more and more like traditional cigarettes, and legislation is worked out to regulate the product.

E-cig industry awaits looming federal regulation

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Smokers are increasingly turning to battery-powered electronic cigarettes to get their nicotine fix. They're about to find out what federal regulators have to say about the popular devices.

The Food and Drug Administration will propose rules for e-cigarettes as early as this month. The rules will have big implications for a fast-growing, largely unregulated industry and its legions of customers.

Regulators aim to answer the burning question posed by Kenneth Warner, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health: "Is this going to be the disruptive technology that finally takes us in the direction of getting rid of cigarettes?"

The FDA faces a balancing act. If the regulations are too strict, they could kill an industry that offers a hope of being safer than cigarettes and potentially helping smokers quit them. But the agency also has to be sure e-cigarettes really are safer and aren't hooking children on an addictive drug.

Members of Congress and several public health groups have raised safety concerns over e-cigarettes, questioned their marketing tactics and called on regulators to address those worries quickly.

Mugabe warns tobacco farmers against deforestation

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has threatened to ban tobacco production if the indiscriminate cutting down of trees by Zimbabwe's poorly resourced indigenous farmers continues.

In his Independence Day speech weekend, Mugabe said tobacco growers were causing desertification by cutting down trees for their treatment of the golden leaf.

“Our people are growing tobacco and want to make money out of it but on the down side we have seen massive deforestation leading to desertification in some areas. We are saying to them, ‘use coal or we will stop tobacco production’,” he said.

Zimbabwe has in the past decade seen an increase in the number of tobacco growers, thanks to government’s land reform programme.

But the poorly resourced black farmers, who are former workers of the previous white land owners, have turned to forests in their bid to treat the highly rewarding produce, causing an environmental disaster in the process.
