thehindu.com – 6 de Abril de 2015 – UK

Tobacco products such as cigarettes, bidis and gutka are highly toxic and cancerous and kill more people than all other major diseases put together. About 70 per cent of smoking-related deaths worldwide would be in developing countries alone by 2020, Vasanthkumar Mysoremath, convener, Anti-Tobacco Forum (ATF), Mysuru, has said.

New law to hide tobacco on sale in Burton and South Derbyshire shops comes into force today

burtonmail.co.uk – 6 de Abril de 2015 – UK

FORCING shopkeepers to sell cigarettes 'under the counter' is not the way to reduce smoking, according to a Burton store owner.

As of today shop owners across the country, including Burton and South Derbyshire, will no longer be able to display tobacco due to new laws coming into force.

The move is aimed at preventing young people from starting smoking by removing tobacco from view and follows the introduction of the law in larger stores and supermarkets in 2012.

Shaid Hussain, who runs Good News, in High Street, Burton, said: "It is forcing us to sell a legitimate product under the counter.

"I'm unsure of the impact it will have. Having the tobacco hidden might serve to increase people's curiosity, not reduce it.

kxnet.com – 31 de Marzo de 2015 – EEUU

The North Dakota Senate unanimously passes a bill to prohibit the sale of electronic smoking devices and alternative nicotine products to minors.

The measure prohibits the products from being sold in open displays.

It also requires child resistant packaging.

Carrier of the Senate Judiciary Committee's "Do-Pass" recommendation says the measure is meant to keep the products out of the reach of children.

"Your committee heard testimony how small quantities of this liquid nicotine can actually be fatal. We heard of the passing of a small child out East from just that," says Sen. John Grabinger (D) Jamestown.

The bill already passed the House in February and now goes to the Governor's desk.

Teenagers in danger of risking their health with e-cigarettes as 20% admit to trying them

nj.com – 31 de Marzo de 2015 – UK
Millions of teenagers are in danger of putting their health at risk by getting hooked on e-cigarettes, experts warn.

Leading health researchers say they are “very concerned” by the growing number of youngsters trying the devices as a major new study reveals one in five teenagers has accessed them.

E-cigarettes have been marketed as a healthier alternative to smoking conventional cigarettes.

But previous research shows e-cigarettes generate toxic chemicals similar to those found in tobacco and may harm the lungs and immune system.

Worryingly, researchers at Liverpool John Moores University discovered 16% of teenagers who have used e-cigarettes had never previously smoked.

The experts also found e-cigarettes were “strongly related” to drinking among teenagers.

nj.com – 31 de Marzo de 2015 – Escocia

A "children's charter" to highlight the goal of creating a tobacco-free generation in Scotland within two decades is being launched by health campaigners on Wednesday.

At its heart is an ambition for Scotland to achieve an adult smoking rate of 5% or less by 2034.

Organizations are being asked to sign up to the charter's six principles and to pledge to review their policy and practice to help protect children from the harms caused by smoking.

ASH Scotland chief executive Sheila Duffy said: "The Charter for a Tobacco-free Generation is a way of driving forward Scotland's compelling vision to free our children from the tobacco epidemic that has claimed so many lives and led to so much misery.

Tobacco warnings on hold, BJP MP wants research on cancer link

hindustantimes.com – 1 de Abril de 2015 – India

India will miss the April 1 deadline to put bigger health warnings on cigarette packets after a parliamentary panel asked for time to gauge the economic impact of the decision on tobacco farmers, in a move that riled activists who say India needs to quickly wean its citizens off addictions to products such as cigarettes and chewing tobacco.

Studies suggest over a million die in India from tobacco-related illnesses every year, most of which are cancers of the mouth and lungs, and graphic warnings – such as photographs of tumors – are seen as possible deterrents. Tobacco will account for 13% of all deaths in India by 2020.
