E-cig house fire prompts safety warning

iwcp.co.uk – 29 de Julio de 2015 – UK

E-CIGARETTE users on the Isle of Wight are being warned to be careful when charging vaping devices and other electrical items following a fire at a house in East Cowes on Sunday.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service put out the warning after they were called to the property to extinguish a burning sofa.

The fire was caused by an e-cigarette charger, which had been charging a vaping device on the arm of the sofa.

"Thankfully, the property had working smoke alarms installed and were alerted to the fire in time for us to rescue a man and two dogs," said a spokesman for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.

"Advice has been issued nationally to e-cigarette users, following reports of several devices exploding while charging, which caused minor fires.

"It is not an apparent problem locally, but around the country other fire services have reported incidents of fires caused by e-cigarettes and we don’t want any more such incidents happening on the Island."

US Chamber of Commerce is in Big Tobacco’s thrall

aljazeera.com – 30 de Julio de 2015 – EEUU

A flurry of news articles, opinion pieces and blog posts have followed a June 30 New York Times investigation detailing how the U.S. Chamber of Commerce uses its clout to undermine public health measures that restrict tobacco use, sale and uptake, as mandated by the World Health Organization’s global tobacco treaty, the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. While the coverage has highlighted the Chamber’s faculty for undermining tobacco control internationally, it has largely omitted the organization’s political interference in the United States on behalf of Big Tobacco.

Australian government’s $50m investment in defending against Big Tobacco legal thuggery

aljazeera.com – 29 de Julio de 2015 – Australia
Imagine you were about to buy a property and were advised that in two years time, a major freeway would be built two hundred metres away, greatly diminishing the value of your purchase. Then imagine you went ahead anyway, the freeway was built, and your property value went down as expected. You took the person who sold you the property and the government who built the freeway to court, seeking compensation.
Fools and their money are easily parted.

This is, in effect, what the tobacco transnational Philip Morris has done with Australia’s plain tobacco packaging laws, fully implemented in December 2012, when it started legal proceedings against the Australian government under a bilateral trade agreement between Hong Kong and Australia signed in 1993. The arrogant claim being made is that our plain packaging law breaches the agreement between the government of Hong Kong and the government of Australia for the promotion and protection of investments.

The Rudd government announced plain packaging on April 29, 2010. At that time, Philip Morris tobacco products in Australia were manufactured by Philip Morris Australia. On February 23, 2011, Philip Morris Asia purchased Philip Morris Australia and on June 27, 2011 – a full 14 months after knowing the government intended to introduce plain packs – Philip Morris Asia served its notice of claim to the Australian government.

Now Parliament has approved the Excise Duty (Amendment) bill, 2015, which sought to amend the 2014 Act and increase the duty on cigarettes and cigars.

Uganda: Anti-Tobacco Bill Passed

MPs yesterday passed the Anti-tobacco Bill 2014 with some amendments, ending uncertainty over a public health initiative opposed by corporate interests.

First moved in March 2014 by Kinkiizi East MP Dr Chris Baryomunsi, now the junior minister of health for general duties, the bill seeks to promote and protect the right to health and life as a fundamental human right.

Should President Museveni assent to the bill, it will set the bar higher for both the tobacco industry and smokers. Among other things, the bill establishes the tobacco control committee, and imposes a responsibility on a person consuming tobacco product to ensure the he or she doesn't expose another person to tobacco smoke.
