WEST VIRGINIA TOYS WITH RAISING TOBACCO TAXES

nacsonline.com – 17 de septiembre de 2015 – EEUU

CHARLESTON — West Virginia, which has one of the lowest tobacco tax rates in the United States, might consider increasing tobacco excise taxes in an effort to offset the state’s dismal budget, the Bluefield Daily Telegraph reports. Currently, West Virginia has a 55-cent per pack tax on cigarettes.

“There’s room on the tobacco side,” for higher taxes, said state delegate Eric Nelson, who participated in a legislative session on alcoholic beverages, gambling and tobacco products. Nelson pointed out that any hike would include e-cigarettes, which are not subject to state tobacco taxes at present. “E-cigarettes are a growing segment that needs to be looked at. … We’re significantly below other states. It has become an issue,” he said.

Oral cancer eats up tobacco addict's face

indiatimes.com – 14 de septiembre de 2015 – India

BENGALURU: Imagine having to live without a cheek, upper and lower jaws, parts of eyes, nose, sinus and the base of the skull. That's the story of Adil (name changed), a mouth cancer patient from Shivamogga who lost a portion of his face due to tobacco addiction.

Today, a piece of bone taken from his leg serves as his lower jaw, muscle from the chest forms a part of his palate and his thigh muscle serves as his tongue. The 33-year-old recently underwent a re-constructive surgery during which a tumour as big as a cricket ball was removed from his mouth.

Young people still targets of tobacco industry

newburyportnews.com – 15 de septiembre de 2015 – EEUU
To the editor:

As the school year begins, I want to remind parents that the tobacco industry continues to produce a variety of products to deliver nicotine, many of which are targeted at young people. Products such as e-cigarettes, also known as vapes, or e-hookah, come in flavors like bubblegum, chocolate and apple pie.

These products are sweet, cheap and easy for young people to get. They are commonly sold at convenience stores that young people visit. Some of these products may look fun or harmless but beware. These nicotine products are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration so there is no way of knowing the amount of nicotine or other chemicals they contain. This is important because nicotine is highly addictive and can produce chemical and structural changes in the adolescent brain that can lead to future addictions.

Video Game Warnings Fall Far Short in Rating Tobacco Content

Video games are not adequately rated for tobacco content, according to a new UC San Francisco study that found video gamers are being widely exposed to tobacco imagery.

The researchers concluded that a national ratings board set up more than 20 years ago is not a reliable source for learning whether video games contain tobacco imagery.
