No complaints on tobacco-free parks policy

City officials say the tobacco-free parks policy has not brought any complaints from parkgoers.

The policy, started in April, applies to activities such as youth soccer and softball games in city parks, as well as playgrounds, but does not apply to adult leagues or activities.

City health officials provided an update Tuesday to council’s Public Services committee.

Part of the Live Well Sioux Falls initiative, the policy is intended as positive reinforcement for youth, said Jill Franken, city health director.

The City Health Department also has produced several public service announcements to help spread the word.

Sioux Falls Police say most violators are from out of town and don’t realize they are in violation of park rules. Once approached, all have complied and stop using tobacco. Police also carry Kippi paks, which are personal extinguisher ashtrays that feature the tobacco policy in city parks.
