Tobacco industry gears up for a comeback

JOHANNESBURG – The health ministry has vowed not to back down as it believes the tobacco industry is gearing up to fight back after it’s been hard hit by government's stiffer regulations placed on its products.

Deputy Health Minister Gwen Ramokgopa has called on the health profession to help government in their efforts to reduce cancers caused by tobacco habits.

Yesterday Ramokgopa told the South African Medical Association’s first national congress that government is concerned about the tobacco industry fighting back.

She called on doctors to take a firm stand and help monitor this industry and the effect tobacco has on patients.

“Some structures in parliament seem to be mounting where the tobacco industry is mobilizing for a comeback and a few of the interventions that have shown success in prolonging life.”
