Grand Island, NE- One Grand Island event encouraged tobacco users to kick their unhealthy habit.

More than a dozen area organizations teamed up for the Great American Smoke Out. The event was started by the american cancer society in the 1970's and is held in places throughout the country.

"It's a crucial event, not only to talk about the great american smoke out, but to talk about prevention overall, so to have folks in the community learn about organizations that help with prevention is really key," said Matt Prokop, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network director.

For the first time ever, Thursday's event also offered free health screenings. Participants could have their blood work tested teeth checked and even receive a flu shot.
