Increase Taxes On Tobacco Products To Control Deaths: Thomas R. Frieden

Prevention director Thomas R. Frieden stated that raising taxes on tobacco can help save the lives of people.

Urging higher tax on tobacco, Thomas said that around half a million to a million lives could be saved by making tobacco pricey.

As a result, the people find it hard to meet the expense of it.

Frieden, who is on a visit to India added that taxation, is the single most effectual method to put control over the utilization of tobacco.

"Unluckily, tobacco has turned affordable for many, a little increase in the tax can prevent half a million to a million deaths," he also said.

He said that applying taxes on 'bidi' is hard as it is mostly in an unorganized division.

Mentioning the case of Uruguay that slashed its tobacco utilization by around 25% in the last three years, he added that harsh rules can aid lessen smoking.

He also said that researches have shown that tobacco agriculturists were not adversely affected by admonishing tobacco usage.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is US's premier health endorsement, avoidance and awareness agency, and an international leader in public health.
